Campus Visits

Visit to evaluate the school, not simply to impress the coach.

Use campus visits to evaluate the full experience, not just the soccer program. Spend time understanding the team, coaches, academics, campus environment and whether you can realistically see yourself there.

Top Action

Visit campuses to learn what types of schools and environments appeal to you.

Make targeted campus visits once meaningful recruiting relationships develop.

See the school beyond the soccer field.

Campus visits are one of the best ways to understand whether a college actually feels like the right fit. They give you a chance to experience the campus, learn more about the academic environment, see the athletic facilities, and better understand what daily life might look like as a student-athlete.

Visits can range from an informal walk around campus to a highly structured recruiting visit with the coaching staff. The purpose may also change throughout your process. Early visits can help you learn what you like and dislike. Later visits can help you compare schools and make final decisions.

Before Your Visit

  • Research the school, academic programs, team, coaching staff, conference, and location.

  • Understand where the program currently fits on your recruiting list.

  • Prepare thoughtful questions for coaches and current players.

  • If appropriate, let the coaching staff know you will be on campus.

  • Review your recent communication with the program so you understand the context of the relationship.

While You Are There

  • Look beyond the athletic facilities.

  • Walk through the areas where students actually spend their time.

  • Learn about the academic programs you are considering.

  • Pay attention to the size, location, campus culture, and surrounding community.

  • If you meet the coaching staff, be prepared to talk about yourself, your goals, and your interest in the program.

  • Ask current players about their actual experience—not just the recruiting pitch.

After Your Visit

  • Write down your impressions while they are still fresh.

  • Consider what moved the school up or down your list.

  • Follow up with the coaching staff when appropriate.

  • Update your college list and recruiting notes.

  • Compare the school against your academic, athletic, financial, geographic, and personal priorities.

Every Visit Is Useful

You do not need to wait until a college is actively recruiting you to visit campuses. Seeing different types of schools early in the process can help you understand what you are looking for before important recruiting decisions arrive.

A visit does not have to confirm that a school is right for you. Learning that a school is not the right fit can be just as valuable.

Keep the Bigger Picture in Mind

The soccer program matters, but you are choosing much more than a team. Think about the school you would want to attend if soccer disappeared tomorrow. The strongest college decisions balance the athletic opportunity with academics, campus environment, cost, location, and the overall student experience.
