Ellis McLoughlin was born and raised in Seattle, where he played youth soccer for Emerald City FC and Crossfire, winning multiple state titles and major tournaments. At age 15, he moved to Bradenton, Florida, to join the U.S. U-17 National Team Residency Program. He went on to represent the United States at the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup in South Korea.

After the World Cup, Ellis enrolled at the University of Washington and played for the Huskies during his freshman year, helping the team qualify for the NCAA Tournament. He later signed his first professional contract with Hertha Berlin in the German Bundesliga, spending three seasons with the club from 2007 to 2010. He eventually returned to the United States and signed with the San Jose Earthquakes, where he played for two seasons.

After his professional playing career ended in 2013, Ellis moved directly into coaching and has been on the sidelines ever since. He is passionate about passing along the experiences, lessons, and knowledge he gained throughout his playing career to the next generation of players and continues to bring that perspective to his work as a coach.
