EFC FEMALE STAFF INTERN INITIATIVE

Eastside FC is proud to announce our new coaching intern program. The program features young women who are learning from our dynamic coaching staff, The club is assisting our new coaches with coaching education and mentorship that will build them up to lead the next generation of young girls here at EFC.

"Our intern program springs from Eastside’s Female Staff Initiative that also includes growing a dynamic Alumni Program.  We recognize there is a sharp disconnect between the number of youth female players and the number of female coaches in the US, said program lead, Emily Cole. "We believe that creating a culture, programs and infrastructure to better hire, train and retain female staff is a meaningful way to make an impact in our Eastside community and, in time, affect broader change.  This initiative differentiates us, fosters a more impactful experience for our players and expands on our commitment to “building champions in life” by helping young women envision many paths forward to continue engaging with the game as they grow.

The program has begun with three phenomenal young women who have already started working with the EFC coaching staff.

“Eastside FC has a rich history of a deep and distinguished female coaching staff.  Over the past few years we have recognized a deficiency in our ability to attract and retain female coaches, said Eastside FC Coaching Director, Tom Bialek. "As we reflected on the situation, we began to see a declining trend for female coaches in the soccer community overall. In addition to rebuilding our own staff, the initiatives being advanced by Emily Cole, should pave a pathway for more females to become involved as coaches across the state when their playing days finish.”

MEET OUR INTERNS

HANNAH DEIGHTON is a recent graduate of Willamette University in Salem, OR. At Willamette, she studied Communications and Economics while she captained the varsity women's soccer team and led the campus wide Intramural program. Originally from Southern California, Hannah recently moved to Seattle to begin an Associate Consulting position with The Spur Group. She is excited to build community in the Greater Seattle Area and be a part of a reputable club in the PNW focusing on fostering players, but more importantly, people. As a center back, Hannah is a firm believer that defense wins games. She grew up playing center mid and idolizing Steven Gerrard (Go Reds! PL Champions 2020), but

enjoyed a collegiate experience in the back initiating counter attacks and scoring "defensive goals" (denying shots off the goal line, the perfectly timed slide tackle, and the occasional header goal on the other end). Hannah loves the opportunity soccer holds bringing people together and creating community through fun, healthy competition. She is eager to continue her soccer experience through coaching and to give back to youth and create a safe and welcoming space they enjoy.

LIZ ZITNIK is thrilled to start her coaching journey with Eastside FC. She has a background in marketing and web development and always wanted to try her hand at coaching since soccer was such a big part of her childhood. Liz is a proud Eastside alumni, having played

her last 4 years of premier soccer with the club from 2008 to 2012. Those were defining years in her development as a young adult and team player and she looks forward to using her experience to inspire her coaching journey. She wants to help build players that are mentally strong enough to thrive at such a competitive level and encourage them to put their best foot forward for their team.Liz still remembers the many lessons my past coaches have taught her and she looks forward to passing on that wisdom to the next generation.

ERIN STACEY is 22 years old and was born and raised in Washington. She attended Skyline High school and graduated in 2016. In 2018 Erin became Certified as a Nursing Assistant. Currently she is attending Washington State University pursuing a degree in Genetics and Cell Biology with which she wants to continue into Physician Assistant School. Erin started playing soccer when I was 5 years old and fell in love with the game. She started her competitive soccer career at Crossfire and played with them until 2014, after which she joined the Eastside FC family. During her senior year of high school Erin tore the labrum in her hip and was no longer able to play at a competitive level. Once she went to college she tried to stay connected by playing intramurals but was unfortunately injured again. After that she felt very isolated from the sport and didn’t really know how to get back into it. She loves the opportunity to mentor young soccer players and pass on her love and respect for the sport and she is very excited to be immersed back into the world of soccer.
