Congratulations to EFC alum Makaylie Moore and her BYU Cougars for making to the 2021 NCAA College Cup! After outlasting host Santa Clara in the semifinal, the Cougars were defeated in the Championship Match in a shootout to Florida State. Eastside FC spoke with Makaylie after her incredible experience of making the Championship game.
EFC: Describe your journey this season with BYU.
MM: This season with BYU was my Covid year, so I was lucky enough to play 5 seasons of college soccer. At the beginning of our season we had lost a few games and even lost to Utah State who we had never lost to in program history. I think that was the turning point in our season. We knew we had to come together as a team and play together instead of individuals if we wanted to make it to the NCAA tournament. The season ended with us as a 4th seed in the NCAA tournament. We beat Virginia, a 1 seed who knocked us out of the tournament in the spring, to advance to the elite 8. This season we made BYU history and were the first team to make it to the college cup and then play in National Championship game. I don’t think most collegiate athletes are wanting to give up their sport, but I couldn’t have asked for a better season to end my career with.
EFC: Reflecting back, what were some of the best moments of your career at BYU?
MM: There were so many great moments at BYU. My first collegiate goal was something I will always remember. We were playing Marquette and I scored a diving header. Another great memory I would say was beating Santa Clara in the spring at their home field, which was the first time in BYU history. The best moment overall for me personally, was when I scored two goals in the elite 8 at our home field to send BYU to our first College Cup this season. That was a game I will always remember. It was a great experience to play in the National Championship game as well. We didn’t get the result we wanted but were happy we got there together and we able to create new standards for BYU soccer.
EFC: Describe the atmosphere in Santa Clara from the games to the other parts of the weekend.
MM: The atmosphere is Santa Clara was crazy, especially when we played Santa Clara in the semi final. It was a sold out stadium with so many Santa Clara fans. I was used to having as many if not more BYU fans at most of our away games, but Santa Clara really packed the house for this game. I remember trying to talk to one of my teammates and not even being able to hear myself yell because the crowd was so loud. It was a fun atmosphere to have my last two collegiate games at for sure! We were new to the college cup so we didn’t know quite what to expect, but it was similar to our normal road games expect all final four teams stayed at the same hotel.
EFC: Is there anything you want to tell players at EFC about playing at this level?
MM: I grew up playing for EFC and loved it! It is such a great club that really prepares you for the next level of soccer! If you want to play at the Division 1 level you can! Listen to your coaches and always train hard. My biggest advice would to be watch the game and love it. Watching the game can you give the edge at the next level when everyone is a talented player!
